What to do when you notice a roof leak Certified Roof Systems | Reviewed 24 October 2026 Record useful observations from a safe location, protect people from hazards, and prepare a clear description for professional follow-up. Put safe observation first Stay away from electrical equipment affected by water and from sagging or visibly distressed areas. Do not enter a roof or attic where access is unsafe. Use appropriate emergency services when there is immediate danger. From a safe location, record the time, weather and rooms affected. A photo of an interior stain can be useful, but the visible location may not identify the point where water entered. Prepare the repair conversation Describe whether the leak occurs with rain, wind or snowmelt, and whether it has happened before. Include the roof material and any known work near chimneys, walls or equipment penetrations. Repair availability and response timing must be confirmed. This website does not promise emergency dispatch, and submitting a form does not establish that a repair has been scheduled. Planning aid only. Do not climb onto a roof to complete this document. info@certifiedroofsystems.com
