Roof Warranties: Questions to Ask Before Approval

Understand manufacturer product coverage, workmanship terms and project-specific warranty documents before approving a Flathead Valley roofing project.

Understand manufacturer product coverage, workmanship terms and project-specific warranty documents before approving a Flathead Valley roofing project.

Start with the actual documents

A roof warranty is a written set of terms, not a general promise that every future roof issue is covered. Ask for the documents that apply to the named products and the contractor’s workmanship scope. Keep them with the proposal and any approved changes.

A product warranty addresses the manufacturer’s stated coverage. Workmanship terms address the contractor’s stated work. Eligibility, exclusions and responsibilities can differ, so compare them separately before making assumptions.

Ask how the proposed system becomes eligible

For a manufacturer program, ask which products, components, installation requirements and registrations are required for the warranty being proposed. Confirm who completes registration and what record you receive. A contractor credential alone does not identify every term or automatically establish coverage.

GAF publishes its current warranty information for property owners. Review the actual document applicable to the proposed roof rather than relying on a program name or a verbal summary. Specific CRS workmanship durations and enhanced warranty terms are confirmed in the project agreement.

Clarify what happens after the project

Ask about maintenance responsibilities, the process for reporting a problem and how later penetrations or equipment changes should be handled. Keep invoices and records of any subsequent work. A future repair or modification may require coordination with the contractor or warranty provider.

If transfer to another owner matters, ask what the document requires and when any action must occur. Do not assume that transfer, consequential damage, drainage or unrelated components are included without reviewing the written terms.

Use a warranty checklist in proposal comparisons

Compare the issuer, named products, covered work, exclusions, registration, maintenance, transfer and reporting process. Write down any unanswered questions and resolve them before approving the work.

This guide explains questions to ask; it does not expand a product warranty or replace the agreement. For your roof, request the complete documents and a defined construction scope alongside the price.

Frequently asked questions

Does Certified Roof Systems publish one warranty duration for every project?

No single duration is promised by this guide. The actual product coverage and workmanship terms must be supplied for the specific proposal.

Does a manufacturer credential guarantee a specific warranty tier?

No. The contractor’s credential level, selected system, installation and registration terms may affect eligibility. Confirm the specific warranty in writing.
